OBITUARY LATE JAMES M'CRACKEN Sr. The death took place last week in the Wagga District Hospital of an old and respected pioneer of the Humula district, Mr. James M'Cracken sr., of Darlow-street, Wagga, at the age of 84 years. He was born at County Derry, Ireland, and arrived in Australia when a young man. He was for several years overseer for the late Sir Samuel M'Caughey at Coonong and Bundure Stations. He then went to Humula and managed Umbango Station for the Bundure Estate. Later he selected land at Humula called "Sheron Vale," where he resided with his wife, who predeceased him on May 14, 1917. He married Miss Ellen Femmins [sic should be TIMMINS], a native of Dublin, Ireland. He leaves a family of three sons and five daughters living — Robert, of "Sheron Vale," Humula; Alexander, of New Zealand, and late of the A.I.F.; and James, of Sydney, formerly of the Albury Hotel, Wagga; and two sons deceased. The daughters are Mrs. Walter Harriden, of "The Pinnacle," Big Springs; Mrs. William Harriden, of Albury Road, Wagga; Mrs. E. J. Holloway, of Bondi, Sydney; Mrs. J. Hogan, of Darlow-st., Wagga and Mrs. L. Fawcett, of Berry-street, Wagga. He also leaves 34 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The deceased was a very successful exhibitor at the M.P. and A.A. Shows at Wagga years ago and at the Sydney Shows with farm produce, bacon and tobacco. Some of his tobacco leaves were sent to Chicago Exhibition many years ago. The deceased, who was a courageous and determined man, encountered Morgan, the notorious bushranger, on several occasions. |
