Bishopsbourne.
The funeral of the late Mr Henry Blackwell took place on Friday afternoon, when a goodly number attended. Deceased was much liked throughout the district, having a standing there of nearly 50 years. He was a native of Cornwall, England, was born in 1824, and left England in 1858 for Australia. He spent some months in Victoria before finally coming to Tasmania and settling in this district. He carried on the business of a blacksmith and implement maker up to within a few years of his death, when failing health compelled him to retire, and he has been an almost confirmed invalid and great sufferer, with dropsy and heart disease, for many months past. The deceased was a clever workman, his implements having gained awards throughout the Commonwealth; a noticeable feature was in gaining first award and silver medal for ploughs and implements manufactured by himself, in 1873, and he gained other high awards throughout the States. His work in connection with all church matters was widely known. He took prominent parts in all work of a religious character, being a steward in the local Methodist church, and superintendent of the Sunday school for nearly forty years. He was well known throughout the district, by keenly interesting himself in all political matters, though he did not take any active part in them. He was thrice married, and leaves an aged widow and two daughters to mourn their loss, Mrs. Robert Hall (Needles), and Mrs. A. Robertson, of Victoria. The deceased passed peacefully away at 6 o'clock on Wednesday morning, and was buried in the local cemetery at 2 o'clock on Friday afternoon. After leaving the house, the body was conveyed to the Methodist church, where deceased had been a pillar of strength. Revs. Beckett and Delbridge, of Longford and Bracknell, conducted a short service. Thence the body was conveyed to the English church by pall-bearers, who years ago formed a compact to carry the deceased gentleman's body to its last resting place. Rev. R. K. Collision, of Carrick, spoke in eloquent terms of deceased's sterling worth on all matters concerning religion. The Methodist chapel was draped in black, out of respect to the late gentleman. An in memoriam service will be held in both the churches next Sunday.
