Henry Thomas Green 14.9.1834, baptised 26.10.1834 St Philips-14.3.1909 #1438 Gosford. Boat builder married 28.2.1856 at St Thomas, Nth Sydney to Esther Ann Matilda Sugden b. 14.6.1834 London-13.6.1894 #2451 St Leonards at 72 Alfred St Nth Sydney. Did Henry and his brother Robert marry at the same time in 1856…no registration of either marriage. Henry was listed as a boat builder at Alfred St., St Leonards east in the Sands Directory 1861. On 21 December 1871 in the Otago Daily Times, Henry Thomas Green, boatbuilder of Dunedin filed for bankruptcy on 12th December 1871 and had been declared insolvent on 8th January 1870. The situation improved for Henry in March 1878 when the Otago Rowing Club gave him an order for a new four-oared racing gig. The article mentioned that Henry was the builder of the well-known Isis. On 10th April, 1880, the Otago Daily Times reported on the Exhibition, the Sydney Morning Herald said “Upon visiting the NZ court, our aquatic men cannot help examining the admiring a handsome looking outrigger boat, built by Mr Henry T. Green, now of Dunedin. The article goes on to say that Henry said that he invented the rowlock in Sydney about 1860. Henry returned to Australia and resumed boat building in Lavender Bay in 1889-1902
Henry Thomas Green: Henry went over to New Zealand at the request of his father, George Green. George had purchased a lot of land from the Maories, land whiich included Stewart Island and some on the Bluff and other parcels in the Otargo area. This was being disputed by the government and when George died that was the end of the case. George had cancer in the arm and he died in 1872. Henry Thomas Green wrote a letter to his son Victor Herbert Green on the 9th June 1907 from Tenterfield as Follows:- Dear Vic, Just a few lines to thank you for the caps soap and to say my leg is nearly well. | - Notes: Going through my family history sheaves of papers, I happened to be reminded that an uncle of mine (now deceased), Gordon, investiaged the family's English side some years ago when on holiday in the UK, and traced it back to Joseph Green b. Almondbury, Yorkshire. He was Henry Thoms Green (Snr)'s great grandfather. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Matthewman 14 Nov 1773, Of their 11 children was my ancestor Amaziah b. 27 Oct 1782 in Almonbury, married Mary Ann Chapel (b. Honiton 1787) in Camberwell, London on 14 Sep 1807.
Amaziah's sister Charlotte was sent to Sydney (date unknown to me) as a convict, later freed and married another ex convict Thomas Hyndes. Amaziah got his son George (b. 1810 in Camberwell) out to Sydney in 1822 (aboard the Eliza) and asked Charlotte and Thomas fostered him. He married Maria Bates (b. 14 Dec 1808 in Tasmania) in 1830 in Sydney and they had 11 children including Henry Thomas Green (Snr) in 1834. As your tree states, Henry married Esther Ann Matilda Sugden (B. 1834, Southwark, London) on 28 Feb 1856 in Sydney, but died 1894 at St Leonards according to Uncle Gordon's document. My great-grandfather was his son Henry Thomas Green (Jnr) b.1862 (unverified), who left Sydney and moved to Dunedin NZ, where he married 29 Dec 1884 my ancestor on the Maori side, Andrina Mouat. |
