The Tumut and Adelong Times 23 Jul 1929
OBITUARY MRS. TED. EVANS. By the death, on Saturday night, July 13, of Mrs. Janet Evans, aged 61, wife of ex-Ald. E. C. Evans, Cootamundra lost a very fine lady, who was a worker for most of the public and charitable causes, and who, during the war period in particular, played a noble part. Those who recall this days in Cootamundra when the Allies needed all the help that the womenfolk could give towards the comfort of the soldiers will ever associate Mrs. Evans as one of the leaders. One of her sons, Roy, made the supreme sacrifice. Glen is the only son left. For Mr. Evans and Glen the deep sympathy of the community is manifested. They lose a devoted wife and mother ; the people lose one who will be very much missed. Mr. and Mrs. Evans went to Cootamundra forty years ago, from the Cooma district. Mr. Evans, it may not be generally known, was a great horseman in his younger days; and as a noted driver for a four-in-hand, was much sought for. He had the honor of handling the ribbons when the first vice-regal visit was made to the Yarrangobilly Caves — in the days of the zig-zag descent and sharp bends which led to the Caves House before deviations were made to cut out the danger. Whilst a guard on the railway, Mr. Evans met with an accident, and, prior to his ultimate retirement, was in charge of the Cootamundra goods-shed. During the long years that Mr. Evans was an alderman he had the sympathetic assistance of his good wife in all that he tried to do for the ratepayers and the public. Deceased was an aunt of Mrs. R. Masters, of Tumut, and was one of the Cochran family, of Adaminaby. |
