MOTOR FATALITY NANGUS MAN KILLED WHEN RETURNING HOME FOR WEEK-END Ingleby James Paton, aged 27 years, of Nangus, who leaves a wife and two children, was returning home at the week-end with the first wages he had earned for many weeks, when the motor lorry on which he had obtained a lift overturned, and he was killed. Paton had been out of work for a long time and on Monday last secured a job with the Main Roads Board. His home was at Nangus, and his work took him to Gundagai. On Friday night he drew his first week's money and, finding that Messrs. Tierney Bros., of Junee, had their motor lorry in Gundagai, he got a lift. Mr. Frank Tierney was at the wheel and all went well until about 9 o'clock, when the lorry was near Abington Station, about 10 miles from Gundagai. Something then went wrong with the stearing gear, and the lorry, which was carrying a heavy load of farm implements, left the road and overturned. Paton was pinned beneath it, with some of the heavy machinery on top of him. Tierney, seeing the plight of Paton, ran half a mile to Abington homestead to telephone to Gundagai, and Dr. Byrne (Government medical officer) and Constable Hawkins were quickly on the scene. The body was taken to the morgue at Gundagai, and an examination revealed that Paton's neck was broken, and that there were several scalp wounds and other injuries. The inquest was held on Saturday, and the finding was that death had been caused accidentally. |
