He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the 43rd Foot (Monmouthshire Light Infantry). He fought in the Indian Mutiny. He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Star of India (C.S.I.). He fought in the Afghan War between 1879 and 1880. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1880. He retired from the military in 1882, with the rank of General.
