The following story is on Find A Grave. Treat it with caution. I could not get the dates to line up for Maud DUCK nee KISS. This James KISS married an Elizabeth not a Catherine. Catherine may have been his mother. The Man From Snowy River poem was written in 1880-90s. According to wikipedia, the rider was one Jack Riley. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_from_Snowy_River_(poem)
THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER RIDING FEAT OF JAMES KISS (FATHER OF LATE Mrs. C DUCK) GAVE 'BANJO' PATTERSON INSPIRATION TO WRITE FAMOUS POEM. In the year 1843, James Kiss--- father of the late Mrs. C Duck, of Orangeville --was born at Camperdown, near Sydney. He was the third son of James Kiss, sen., who married Miss Ward, a Bankstown resident. When he was sixteen years of age, he and his elder brother, William, were cattle dealing on Monaro on the country around Coolringdon, then owned by Harnett's, who later sold the property to Ryrie. Carbine's Birthplace It was at Coolringdon Station that the racehorse, Carbine, was bred. At this time, Banjo Patterson, the Australian poet, and his people were shepherding on Gegeozerick (near Berridale), about 30 miles from Cooma, and then owned by the Brooks. The Man from Snowy River On Monaro, Banjo Patterson's famous poem, "The Man from Snowy River" was written following a rare feat of horsemanship by one of the youths of Coolringdon - Laurie Harnett- who, in reality, it is said, was none other than Jimmy Kiss. This 16-year-old lad's feat of rounding-up a renowned brumby inspired Patterson to set his deed to verse. The horse young Kiss rode was black- not white, as in the poem. The animal answered to the name of Robin. He afterwards gave the horse to his wife (nee Catherine Higgs) as a wedding present when he married her in 1862. Jimmy Kiss was a well-known rider on Monaro and was never known to be unseated by any bucking outlaw. The Picton Post (NSW 1907-1954), 7 Sept 1933, page 3, "The Man from Snowy River".
