Personal Notes:
E-mail from Caroline "I have been searching for my great grandfather George Holmes for yonks. He is a mystery man and supposed to come to Australia in about l857 and was born in san Francisco.
I know you saw the Edwards tree and he is following this line. I have given it up as I think George told more stories than Grimm’s Fairy Tales. My link was that on George Holmes marriage certificate I can send a copy his father was John Holmes a type founder of Pyrmont. I then found a Rosa Holmes marrying a Charles Lake on 25 th April l862 which appeared in the marriages column of SMH Sydney. I found this in Trove. When I tried to send it --it was all gobbly gook. They married at Scots Church and the notice mentions daughter of Late John Holmes, typefounder of Pyrmont. I don’t think there would be two and
Therefore she would be Georges sister. The other interesting piece of information is that the Gulf Diggings mentioned in the ad is near Moruya and I have found Charles Lake later as a gardener in Woollahra but his children still in the south coast area. George Holmes also was supposed to have received an ISO for 40 years service as foreman boilermaker at Cockatoo Island and when I researched this with St. James Palace, it seems that it was a George Fletcher that got the ISO not George Holmes. Co incidentally George Fletcher built the home in l877 at 46 Louisa Road Balmain where George and his family lived in l880
This man may have led a double life and had two aliases. Any further details on John Holmes typefounder Pyrmont, I am currently getting info from transcription agent about the 7 John Holmes who died in Sydney prior to Rosa’s marriage in l862. I will let you absorb all this and you may wish to come back to me. Finally on George’s marriage certificate to Margaret Wade in l866 it lists his father as above and his mother Caroline gager . No info has been found on her or the family’s arrival in OZ. Kind regards Carolyn."

This public tree has about 60,100 people. Every person in the tree is related by birth or marriage to at least one other person in the tree - no strays. The people in the tree come mainly from four projects.
  1. My family tree. The original project begun about 1998. ID numbers less than about 6,000
  2. Canberra and Queanbeyan Pioneers. The next 30,000 begun about 2004. Sourced almost entirely from HAGSOC's excellent 'Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan'. The project began when I decided to add siblings, spouses and parents for a relation with an entry in the Register. 12 years work.
  3. Wagga Pioneers. I moved to Wagga and thought I would extend the Queanbeyan project by adding people from Wagga Wagga & District Family History Society's 'Pioneers of Wagga Wagga and District'. About 10,300 people added over about a year.
  4. Tumut Valley Pioneers. During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, I decided to extend the above projects by adding pioneers of the Tumut Valley. Initial sources were Snowden's 'Pioneers of the Tumut Valley' and 'Relict of ... Lives of Pioneering Women of Tumut and District'. Excellent references published by Tumut Family History Group. I've also added material from newspapers of the time - especially, death records, obituaries and weddings from 'Tumut and Adelong Times'. This project is in its early stage and might take a few years. I plan to extend to the upper Monaro (Adaminaby, Kiandra, Cooma, Jindabyne).
I upload new information to this website about every 3 months. My motivation for these projects is to provide public information for people seeking to trace ancestors and what became of them. Much of the information I provide can be difficult to find.
If you find errors - anything incorrect (dates, places, wrong parents, wrong children), and you have evidence, I would love to fix them. Or, if you have information that would extend my projects, do not hestiate to contact me on the email link below. I do not publish information on living people - which means I'm not much interested in people born after about 1920, and I usually distrust material from before about 1770 without extremely good sources.
