| Personal Notes: |
|
James Simmers was born in Scotland in 1831. He arrived in Victoria in 1857 and engaged in mining. In 1860 he moved to Adelong where he carried out hydraulic sluicing for gold with varied success.
About 1867 he leased the old water powered flour mill at Gilmore and when that lease expired he leased the steam flour mill at Mill Angle. This mill operated two pairs of stones and two pairs of rollers for crushing the grain. The mill was of high standing and employed nine hands. James Simmers was elected an Alderman to the first Municipal Council in 1887. The Tumut and Adelong Times 15 Jun 1916 OBITUARY. In the death of Mr. James Simmers, which occurred on Saturday last, the district has lost one of its oldest pioneers, and one who was held in the highest of esteem by all acquaintances. He was born at Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1828, and came to Victoria in 1857, taking up the vocation of mining. In 1860 he came to Adelong, where he went in for hydraulic sluicing with varied successes for about 10 years. Milling was his next at the flour mills at Gilmore, which he carried on some years, then purchased the steam mills at Tumut, where he regularly carried off prizes for flour at every show held. His next venture was farming at Gilmore, which he carried on for 12 years, then went to reside with his brother-in-law, Mr Watson, at Grahamstown, where he remained up till the time of his death, excepting that a little over a year ago he made a short stay with his daughter in Tumut, Mrs. McDonald. He was a martyr to rheumatism, having to use crutches to get about with ; but about six months ago he became perfectly invalided, and had to be wheeled about in a chair. Deceased was one of the first members of the Tumut Municipal Council, having been elected near the top of the poll in the ballot. He took an active interest in all matters affecting the good and welfare of the town, always being near the head of lists of candidales ballotted for. He was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, and for some years occupied the position of treasurer to the Masonic Lodge. In 1870 he was married to the daughter of Mr. J. Speirs, who died in 1881, and he afterwards married the daughter of Mr. D. Watson, who also predeceased him. The members of the family left to mourn the loss of a fond and loving father are, in the order of ages, Mrs Williams (Adelong), George (Cootamundra), Miss Barbara (Grahamstown), Mrs J. Moon (Tamworth), and Mrs E. W. McDonald (Tumut). We deeply sympathise with them in their affliction. Deceased's remains were brought to Tumut for interment, Messrs Boston Bros being the undertakers, and the service was conducted by Rev. Davies, who stated that he would refer to the death later on at the churches in Adelong and Tumut. |
