- Notes: A magisterial inquiry was held at the Court-house yesterday (Wednesday) on the body of Mr. John Harvey Cassidy, an old resident of Tumut, and well known in the mining circle. It appears that the deceased, apparently in good health, left town at noon on Tuesday for the purpose of visiting the Lac-ma-lac reef. After inspecting a claim in which he was interested he and Mr. White, mining manager, started for another claim some three hundred yards distant. They proceeded together a short distance, when Mr. Cassidy left the road, and went towards a creek some few yards off. White proceeded, thinking that Cassidy would follow him. In a short time a miner who was working in a claim close to the creek, on hearing his dog barking, came to the surface, and saw the dead body of Mr. Cassidy lying on the ground, face downwards, with one hand under his head. The body was brought into town on Thursday, and the inquest was held at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Dr. Verschuer was of opinion that death resulted from disease of the heart, and a verdict to that effect was returned by the jury. June 5th, 1873.
