Notes: Surname spelt Pendergrass on marriage index
The following information was provided by Maureen Clunne a Pendergast descendant:- Colonial Secretary's letter dated 11th August 1823. To the Constable on duty between Windsor and Newcastle, and to all others concerning John Pendergast of Airds and Patrick Ward, free by certificate, permission to proceed to Patrick's Plains to inspect the undermentioned Cattle in charge of George Loder. 120 head horned Cattle, branded JP on rear hip. The pass was issued for only 12 days from present date. John Pendergast was one of the first selectors in the Omeo district in Victoria. The informant registered on John's death certificate was John Joseph Shield of Bobundarah. John Joseph's surname is spelt incorrectly, as he was John Pendergast's step son, and his surname should have been spelt Sheil. He was the son of Emma B. Taylor and her 1st husband, William Sheil. John Pendergast, assisted by his eldest sons drove the first mob of cattle over the mountains to the Sydney market in 1853. The route over which the first cattle were taken to the Omeo Plains in Victoria, is still the main route between the Monaro and the Omeo districts. The route today is called " The Barry Way ". It was named after Leo Barry OBE. Leo was the great grandson of the original Tom Pendergast, John's half brother. At times there was no market for their cattle, so John and the boys would slaughter them and boil the carcasses down for tallow, which was stored in bags made from the skins. The tallow found a ready market. John also carted hay to Sydney by horse and wagon and sold it at the place now known as the Haymarket. he was the first to sell hay there in 1834. He was the eldest of the first Australian born generation of 4 brothers and had land at Cottage Creek, 12 miles from Cooma NSW. Previous to his move to the Monaro district, he and his wife Elizabeth, owned a farm at Campbelltown, 20 miles from Sydney, wher John raised cattle and grew hay. |
