Joseph & Sophia AUSTEN (or Austin)
Sophia Lewis was the daughter of George Lewis, Carpenter and Ann Winter. She was born in Tenterden, Kent in about 1824. There is a baptism for her recorded for 24 April 1814 (something not quite right there). She apparently married James Burt and had a child James Lewis Burt by him. After his death she married Joseph Austen on 11 March 1838, just weeks prior to coming to Australia. It is possible that she was not actually married to Burt, but it seems fairly certain that James was his son. Joseph and Sophia could both read and write and were brought out under an assistance scheme by a Mr Marshall. Joseph's character was certified by Thos Handen, builder of Rolvenden and Robert Twigg for the Vivar of Rolvenden. Sophia had no certificate of character. Joseph and Sophia arrived on the "James Pattison" on 11 Dec 1838 with Sophia's young son James, then aged 3. Joseph was a carpenter and Sophia was a housemaid and needlewoman. On arrival, they lived in Sydney for some time, including Woolloomooloo (1841) and Surrey Hills (1843) before moving to Koolcan Station (1845) and then to the Clarence River area by 1847. They lived in and around the Grafton area for the rest of their lives. In the Bawden Lectures, Joseph is listed as one of only a handful of residents of Grafton prior to the discovery of gold in New England. Children were: James Lewis Burt AUSTEN b. about 1835 in Kent (Sophia's son by George BURT) Mary Ann b. 1839 Helen (Ellen) b. 1841 Thomas b. 1843 William Koolcan b. 1845 George b. 1847 Frank b. 1849 Emma b. 1851 Joseph b. 1853 Sophia b. 1855 Unnamed b. 1857, died 27 Feb 1857 Sarah Jane b. 1858 Charles Winton b. 1860 They lived for many years at Ramournie, outside Grafton. This was a large station and small town which owed its existence to a meatworks (the Austral). When the meatworks closed, the town died. Both are buried at Ramournie, and the land is owned by their ancestors. Sophia died 31 July 1893 at Ramournie, Joseph died 26 Sep 1890 at Orana River close by. They owned property at Mary St in Grafton, and Joseph built a house for WB Greaves, the surveyor of the Clarence. There are many descendants living in the Clarence, mainly around OBX Creek and Chambigne. |
