Personal Notes: |
Joseph Allatt was born in Yorkshire in 1829 and came to Tumut in 1857. For 57 years he carried on the business of wheelwright and blacksmith in Capper Street near the Catholic Church. His sons were also skilled tradesmen;
>Charles Allatt, >James Allatt, >William Allatt, >George Allatt (drowned aged 10 years). and the daughters were; >Easter Allatt (married Thomas Baker)B, > Sarah Allatt. They specialised in building wagons and farm lorries, and as farriers and blacksmiths. Their old home was next to the shop and members of the family were still residing there in 1967. The shop which Joseph Allatt built is still standing but is now used as a machinery shop. For a considerable period Joseph Allatt and his sons had the major share of farrier business and by far the greater part of the wagon building trade but after the turn of the century when there were so many horses to be shod there were quite a number of other farriers in business at the same time. Founding Member Tumut Temperance Society (Tumut Pioneers P107) Wheelwright shop on Capper Street (p113) The following death notice appeared in the Tumut and Adelong Times on 24 December 1912: Allatt, Joseph one of our earliest town pioneers, the cause of death being senile decay. He assisted in building the first bridge over the Tumut River. About 7 years ago he became a victim of an influenza epidemic and ever since he has not been his old self. |
