Personal Notes:
John Archer Broughton who was born on 11 December 1818 at Appin settled on the Tumut Rlver in 1836, first at Mundongo and later at Coo-Keep-Head (later called Cockup and now Gocup).

He was the son of William Broughton who came to the Colony in 1788 with the First Fleet under Governor Phillip who became Commissary General in charge of all stores in the Colony and for a period was acting Governor of Tasmania. John’s mother was Elizabeth Charlotte Kennedy.

On 4 September 1828, Governor Darling made a Land Grant of 1280 acres at Appin to William Broughton.

When they lived at Appin, John Archer Broughton attended Mr. Cape's school.

At Appin on the 1St June 1843 John Archer Broughton married Isabelle Bingham, a daughter of Henry Bingham. He was the Crown Lands Commissioner for the Tumut District and Murrumbidgee area which extended from Yass to the junction of the Murrumbidgee with the Murray.

In 1839 John Archer Broughton held a very large run at Jingellic between the Murrumbidgee and the Murray Rivers which he bought from Guise Brothers. In 1840 he was issued with a Pasturage Licence, probably for his Gocup Run.

In 1848 John Archer Broughton’s Squatter's Run at Mundongudee (Mundongo) was shown as 55,000 acres. In the same year he and his father-in-law, Bingham held 26,000 acres on the Gilmore Creek.

John Archer Broughton occupied leading positions in Tumut and District and rented considerable areas of his property to tenant farmers. A County map of the County of Wynyard dated 1861 shows that he held 1,594 acres of freehold land on the west side of the Tumut River at Gocup.

A rather strange circumstance in his lifetime was that although he had spent so many years with considerable land and stock interests, he sold out to Sir John Hay, left the district on 18 December 1873, and became Clerk of Petty Sessions at Deniliquin. He died there in 187827.
