Personal Notice The Argus 31 December 1938
"Mr. John F. O'Reilly has been provi- sionally appointed as superintending en- gineer of the Postmaster-General's De- partment In Melbourne. He has been In a similar position In Brisbane for two years, and before that time was in Perth. He succeeds Mr. S. W. Gleed, who left some time ago to become superintending engineer in Sydney." Obit The Argus 11 Sep 1940 " MR. JOHN_F. O'REILLY The death, occurred yesterday in the Mercy Hospital, East Melbourne, of Mr. John Francis O'Reilly, 59, superintend- ing engineer of the Postmaster-General's Department, Victoria. Beginning his career in the N.S.W. Education Department in 1898, Mr. O'Reilly transferred to the Post-office in 1900, and later had extensive experience In all States. From 1900 to 1918 he was attached to the postal engineering staff in N.S.W. In 1918 he transferred to South Australia, and in 1919 to Queensland, where he was divisional engineer of southern Queensland. In 1927 he was promoted to supervising engineer of lines, attached to central administration In Melbourne. In 1935 Mr, O'Reilly was promoted to superintending engineer In Western Aus- tralia, and in 1936 he was given a similar position in Queensland. Later he came to Melbourne. Mr. O'Reilly is survived by a widow, who is known throughout Australia for her work as a pottery maker." Obit in Courier-Mail 11 Sept 1940 " Mr. J. F. O'Reilly Dies At 59 Mr. John Francis O'Reilly, 59, superintending engineer of the Postal Department, in Victoria, died in a private hospital in Melbourne yesterday. He had been in the service for 42 years. He was transferred from Sydney in 1919 to the engineering branch in Queensland, to take charge of the telegraph and telephone lines in the Southern division of the State. In 1927 he was promoted to be supervising engineer attached to the Chief Engineer's Staff, Melbourne. During his occupancy of this position he was one of the members of a special commission to investigate telegraph and telephone line construction throughout the Commonwealth. Later he went to Perth as superintending engineer of Western Australia, and returned to Queensland in a similar capacity in November, 1936. With Mrs. O'Reilly, he made a world tour in 1937, during Mr. O'Reilly's furlough, and was present at the Coronation festivities. Mr. O'Reilly was appointed early last year to the position of superintending engineer, Victoria. He leaves a widow." |
