THE LATE MR JOHN BLUNDELL SR There passed away at the Tumut District Hospital on Sunday after noon, 30th ult., one of Canberra's oldest inhabitants, in 'the person of Mr John Blundell sr., at the ripe old age of 90 years. Born at Liverpool Plains in the year 1838, he went to Canberra with his parents when eight months old and resided there until he went to Condon in the early 60's, where he resided until the Federal Government bought the property. During his residence at Condon, particularly of later years, 'Condon House' was a very favorite place for tourists, and Mr. and Mrs. Blundell made their home 'a home away from home' for all who sought their hospitality, and even the man who humped 'Matilda'' was always given the best of treatment. Mr. Blundell was a bullock driver from his early days, and could take a waggon where many others could not. He was also noted as a tourist guide, and his services were much sought after; he was also a wonderful bushman. Deceased was also an enthusiastic and expert fisherman. Eight years ago Mr. and Mrs. Blundell came to Tomorroma, where they lived a retired life, although an industrious one. At that time their eldest son, Howard, a returned soldier, died from the effects of the war ; this put the old man back and at the time it was thought he would pass out. Up to about a fortnight before he died he even drove his bullock team to plough his new ground, which had just been cleared. On the Sunday previous to his death he complained of pains, which gradually grew worse, when Dr. Browne ordered him to the Tumut Hospital, where everything was done for him, but to no avail. The day before he was ploughing in the field and feeling hail and hearty. He always attended the vegetable and flower garden, where he used to work every morning, and which is a picture and was a great credit to the old man, who was a lover of Nature's gifts. Persons who came in contact with him have often remarked that he was one of the most unselfish and kindly men they had ever known. He leaves a sorrowing widow and four children — one son, Everard (Tomorroma) and three daughters, Mrs. T. B. Lea, of Gosford; Mrs. .T. Smith, of Adelong, and Mrs. D. Bush, of Tomorroma. The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the new cemetery, beside his son, yesterday week, Rev. T. A. Gair officiating at the grave. The son was too ill to attend the funeral owing to an attack of sciatica.
