Tragic Death, of a Bega Farmer, Bega was thrown into, a state of grief on Saturday evening when the news came from Sydney that the dead body of Mr John Britten, of Numbngga, had been found at Watson's Bay, Deceased left home about a fortnight before, intending to. visit Sydney and then Cobar, where he had mining interests. In Sydney, he put up at Kelly's Hotel, as he had always stayed at their place in Bega. He was in his usual good health and appeared to be enjoying himself, patronizing the theatres and other places of amusement. He went away from Kelly's on the 26th, and, not returning, they communicated with the police, and a search was made. On Friday some sightseers, at South Head noticed the body of a man on the rocks below, about 10ft above the water. Word was sent to the Water Police, but owing to the rough sea they were unable to reach the body, and it was not recovered until 1 o'clock on Saturday, when a resident of Womerah avenue named Robert Gould, who has had previous experience in recovering bodies at the spot, assisted by the police, succeeded in reaching it. The body was shockingly mutilated, and deceased had fallen a distance of 180ft.
Word was sent from the Sydney police to the Bega police, who subsequently wired to Sen.-sergeant Harry Childs, a nephew of deceased, to identify the body, which he did, and placed the matter beyond doubt. The inquest threw no fresh light on the subject, an open verdict being returned. Messrs Ernest Britten, (son) and W. Britten (nephew) left for Sydney on Sunday, and the remains of deceased were interred in the Waverley cemetery on Tuesday, where his father's remains also lie. Deceased who was 58 years of age, was born at Crewah, Monaro, but had resided at Numbugga for many years, and had acquired a very comfortable holding. No man in the district (says the 'Southern Star') was more beloved and respected by all classes, his benevolence, geniality, and broad mindedness endearing him to everyone.
