The son of Sarah Hickey and Andrew Butler, he married Mary nee Dwyer, daughter of Jane and James Dwyer, on 16 Oct 1851 in Cappawhite, County Tipperary, Ireland. John and Maryemigrated to the colony with their 2 (2) children, Sarah and Andrew, traveling as assisted immigrants the family arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney on 6 Jan 1856 on the ship "Bee". During the journey, Mary gave birth to their 3rd child, Jane. Burial Mittagang Cemetery, Cooma, New South Wales
