DEATH OF Mr. JOHN HASTINGS.
Another of our old and respected pioneers has passed away in the person of Mr. John Hastings, who was an honest and industrious man with hosts of friends but no enemies. He passed peacefully away on Monday morning last, after enduring with great fortitude an illness that lasted for a period of six weeks. He had the satisfaction of retaining his faculties to the last, and the whole of the members of his affectionate family and his devoted wife were present to witness the departure hence of the spirit of one who had ever been a model husband and a kind and indulgent father. The late Mr. Hastings was a native of Shanegolden, County Limerick, Ireland. He was born in the year 1840, and arrived in Sydney from his native home in the year 1866. After spending a few months in the vicinity of Port Jackson he came to Tumut, where he has remained ever since. We, on behalf of our readers, desire to express heart felt sympathy towards the bereaved ones over the deplorably sad loss they have sustained. The names of the members of the family, all of whom were born in the district, and still reside here, and are held in the highest of respect, are— Messrs. Michael, James, John, Joseph and Edward Hastings, Misses Margaret, Johanna, and Bridget Hastings, and Mrs. W. Kiley.
O, silent grave to thee we trust. This precious part of earthly dust; Guard it safely, sacred tomb, Till we, her children, ask for room.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, and although rain was falling in torrents, a large concourse of earnest mourners followed the remains of the deceased to their last resting place, Rev. Father Cahill performing the sad obsequies at the grave, aud Mr. H. W. Hoad most creditably carried out the undertaker's duties.
