The Tumut and Adelong Times 15 Jun 1926
Death of Mrs George R. Ibbotson. The irreconcilable reaper, Death, snatched yet another of the old pioneers — the immediate connecting links with the past and early settlement of the interior, of New South Wales — when on Friday last, at 11.30 a.m., Mrs. Lucy Annette Ibbotson, wife of Mr. George Robert Ibbotson, of Russell-street, Tumut, went to that bourne whence no traveller returns, death being due to senile decay, she having attained the ripe age of 80 years. Deceased was a native of the district, first seeing the light of day on 30th January, 1846. Her maiden name was Buckley, and her parents lived on Adelong Creek. She married Mr. George Ibbotson (now in his 92nd year) on Sept. 3, 1867, and for 52 years lived in the same cottage, in which she died, the couple leading a quiet life, happy amid their surroundings, but always thoughtful and considerate for others in reverse, sickness or affliction. A family of one daughter and five sons were reared to woman and man's estate, viz : Mrs. Oddy, Arthur (Tumut), Charles (Goulburn), Albert (Stanmore), Rowley (Tumut), Herbert (Coonabarrabran) and Walter (Mascot), who with a sorrowing and enfeebled husband are left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother and a true helpmeet. There are 40 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, Mrs. Jas. Hargreaves (Tumut Plains), who was bridesmaid at Mr. and Mrs. Ibbotson's wedding, visited the late Mrs. Ibbotson the day before she was called to her long home. The funeral took place on Sunday, the remains of the grand old lady being laid to rest in the Church of England portion of the New Cemetery, Rev. T. A. Gair officiating at the graveside. Messrs. Fuller and Burt attended to the mortuary arrangements. The coffin was bestrewn with beautiful wreaths, numbering 50, bearing tacit tribute to the high esteem in which the good old lady was held, while messages of sympathy were received by the husband and family from all parts of the State. The cortege was a very long one, one of the largest seen wending its way to the cemetery for some considerable time. A short service was conducted at the home of the Ibbotson family prior to the funeral, the Rev. Gair making kindly reference to the long, clean and serviceable life of the deceased. Deceased's husband, assisted by the Messrs J. McCallum and M. Molloy was able to attend the ceremony at the graveside and see the encoffined body of his partner of 59 years cast into its last resting place. The parting was all the more poignant in that it was the first break in the family, no death of any of their children having occurred. All the children were present, excepting Charles. The pallbearers were the five sons and Mr. Wm. Eurell sr. A memorial service is to be preached in All Saints' Church on Sunday next. |
