GUNDAROO. (From our Correspondent.) TIE RESULT OF INTEMPERANCE - DROWNED IN SIX INCHES OF WATER. ON Thursday evening last the town was thrown into a state of excitement, a messenger having brought in the intelligence that Joseph Booth, an old resident of the district, had been found dead in the Yass River. Evidently drowning (if the term could apply) was the cause of death, as he was lying face down in a depth of water not exceeding six inches. The police immediately started for tihe scene of the disaster to make the usual inquiries. Au examination of the body of deceased revealed a slight cut on the forehead, but no other marks of violence. In a pocket of the deceased's coat a bottle containing spirits was found. The unfortunate man was seen in Gundaroo in the morning. He left for his home, on the Yass River, at 10 o'clock, riding a quiet horse. He was seen at several places on the road, and was then under the influence of liquor. At about 5 o'clock the deceased's wife was surprised to see the horse which he had been riding return home with the saddle and bridle on. Becoming alarmed, Mrs. Booth went down to the crossing place at the river and there found her husband lying in the shallow water, quite dead. The poor woman's state of mind can be better imagined than described. Asaistance was soon at hand, and the body taken on to the river-bank. All efforts to restore animation were futile. As the coroner at Yass could not at- tend a magisterial enquiry was held on Friday by Mr. Affleck, at the deceased's late residence. The following evidence was adduced:-Deceased had been drinking in Gunning on Tuesday and Wednesday, and returned home on Wednesday night with a bottle of brandy in his possession; on Thursday morning he started into Gundaroo, and was at the Royal Hotel (kept by the deceased's sister in-law) for about half-an-hour; no liquor was supplied to him by Mrs. Booth as he was a pro- hibited inebriate; he left town at 10 o'clock; it is surmised that he fell off his horse in crossing the river, 10 miles from Gundaroo, and being stunned was suffocated in the water; only three months ago a person was fined £15 for supplying the deceased With liquor at Gundaroo. A large number of witnesses were examined by Mr. Affleck. ............. At the conclusion of the inquiry the following finding was recorded:--'" I find that the deceased, Joseph Booth, was accidentally drowned, being at the time under the influence of liquor. The police are making strenuous efforts to trace the person who supplied the unfortunate man with liquor. A widow and family are left well provided for. The deceased's remains were interred in the R. C. cemetery to-day.
