Obituary MR. JOSEPH WELSH In our last issue we made mention of the death of another pioneer in the person of Mr. Joseph Welsh. He was born in County Durham, England, came to South Australia 60 years ago, had many and exciting adventures there among the wild blacks, who, at that time, were very troublesome, but he came out unscathed. Thence he went to New Zealand, and had a very narrow escape from a ship accident going over. Remaining there for a time, he arrived in New South Wales, and entered the services of Messrs. Rankin Bros. at their Merool Creek Estate, where he was engaged shepherding for about 40 years. Leaving there, he came to the then Rankin Bros Estate at Bombowlee and shepherded for them until 1876, when he selected 40 acres of land fronting King's road to Lacmalac, settled down there for a while and finally sold out to Mr. W. Glynn. His wife predeceased him many years, and his late years were spent with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs John Arentz. Notwithstanding the weight of 94 years, the old man had a great appetite, which only failed him a short time before his death. The cause of death was senile decay. He leaves behind him two sons, Joseph (Lake Midgeon) and William (Charters Towers), and two daughters, Mrs E. Crampton and Mrs John Arentz (both of Tumut) to mourn his loss. The funeral took place on Tuesday last, the remains being interred in the Presbyterian portion of the old cemetery. Mr. James Elphick was the undertaker, and Mr. D. Davies (son of Rev. R. E. Davies) officiated at the grave. We tender the bereaved ones our deepest sympathy. |
