Personal Notes: |
The In the tree you indicate that Susan Osborne married Joseph Blundell at Boxley, Kent, England in 1840. My understanding is that the story is quite a bit different. Joseph Blundell was a prisoner transported to New South Wales in 1826. He was granted a ticket of leave in 1837 and a conditional pardon in 1843. Around this time he was working for a Mr Jones at Ash Island on the Hunter River near Newcastle. He became friendly with Mercy Blanch nee Balcombe (born 22 May 1814 at Rolvenden, Kent, daughter of Abraham Balcombe and Mercy Webb), the wife of my GG gf Robert Blanch who was born at Rolvendon, Kent, England in 1808. Joseph and Mercy ran off with a child leaving the four other children in Robert Blanch’s care. Mercy then changed her name to that of her grandmother on her mother’s side, Susan Osborne, and eventually the couple became pioneers in the Queanbeyan district. Susan Blundell died on 8 Apr 1892. But it is hard to discover this when this is the summary record from NSW BDM (BRUNDELL instead of BLUNDELL):
11271/1892 BRUNDELL SUSAN ABRAHAM UNKNOWN QUEANBEYAN This is a rather fascinating story, made even more interesting by the very detailed tree you have posted on the net. I have been working on a Blanch family tree starting with Robert Blanch. The more comprehensive tree contains some 20000 people, upon which many others have worked hard over many years. I have traced the nonliving ancestors of Robert Blanch’s children with Mercy Balcombe, but have not included her family with Joseph Blundell. The remaining daughters, Mercy Balcomb Blanch and Mary Balcomb Blanch, migrated to Australia with their families in 1838. Life with Robert Blanch must have been difficult for Mercy because, in August 1842, she absconded with an ex-convict, Joseph Blundell, and adopted her grandmother’s name of Susan. The Blundells became pioneers in the area that later became Canberra, the Australian capital Susan Blundell (formerly Mercy Balcomb) died in April 1892. She had had five children by Robert Blanch and ten by Joseph Blundell. Mary Balcomb Blanch died at Plattsburg, New South Wales, in 1904 at the age of 89, having had seventeen children, seven of whom survived her. |
