The Burrowa News 21 Oct 1938
FORMER BOXING CHAMPION DEAD Merv ('Darkie') Blandon, former bantam champion of Australia, died in St. Vincent's Hospital on Thursday of last week. He was one of the best bantam weights ever produced in Australia, and one of the most popular. Since he retired more than three years ago, Blandon had been in bad health, and spent several periods in hospital. Blandon, who was born at Queanbeyan in 1912, was always known as 'the boy from the bush.' Smith’s Weekly 5 Nov 1938 “Darkie Blandon is the strongest and toughhest featherweight in the boxing game." I penned that Judgment four years ago. The rugged bushboy was a chipoff the old original Australian iron-bark tree of physical courage, bottom and endurance. He was a crowned king of Queensberry, anda fistic prophet, honored — strangely enough — in his own country. But other worlds, offering wider fame and richer reward, remained to be conquered. America, promised land of the pugilists, called. A glove call that was irresistible. While awaiting the settlement of overseas terms and contracts, Darkie Blandon sickened. A fortnight ago, Darkie Blandon died. Fate is a grim Jester. On Thursday night, at the Sydney Sports Ground, a ringside crowd bared its head and stood, silent and motionless, during a full minute of homage, paid to the memory of a gallant warrior. My watch was open on the Press table in front of me. I could plainly hear its tick during the most silent and impressive minute of time I have ever experienced.” |
