THis was the period when Henry VIII died and was succeeded by his son Edward VI and when Mary Queen of Scots who was betrothed to the Dauphin went to France. At this time too, Nostradamus made his first predictions. Joan and John's daughter Tomsen was born on 23 Oct 1548. By the time she married 19-year-old Michael Chowne on 21 Jul 1569, her Christian name was spelled Tamsen. Spellings vary on many records and the 'e' is often dropped from Chowne. Michael, who lived to be 62, was a farmer or husbandman as men of the land were called. He and Tamsen had four sons and five daughters, all born at Plymtree. The eldest son John 1570 was the overseer or executor of his father's will dated 1612. The other children were Agnes and Michael both baptised 1572 (but not necessarily twins); Augustine 1574; Melleny 1577; WILLIAM 19 Jan 1580 who married Katheryne RICHARDS at Ottery 5t Mary on May Day 1609 when they were both 29; Syth 1582 m Thomas HAKE 1606; Robert 1584 m Joan HORNE in 1609 and Elizabeth 1587 m Richard BROADMEDE in 1617. |
