The Watson family too had come from the St Sidwell parish in Exeter sailing from Plymouth in the Marquis ofHastings on 12 Oct 1840. There were 218 bounty, 20 and 15 cabin passengers (the Watsons were intermediate), 24 crew and general cargo. No sickness on board was noted although there were four deaths - one from DTs, one from consumption and two infants succumbed. After 115 days at sea they arrived at Sydney on 04 Feb 1841.
Mr Watson who was a tanner, died on 29 Jan 1844 aged 51 and Maria must have had quite a job raising her 9 year old son and 13 year old daughter in what was virtually a frontier town. Hopefully her brother was in a position to help her. A small advertisement for a millinery establishment in 1855 in the Goulburn Herald carried the name 'M. Watson' but whether or not this was Maria would be difficult to determine. She stayed close to her son-in-law James Elworthy for the rest of her life, no doubt to care for her grandchildren after their mother's death. Aged 82, Maria died at Tumut on 26 Nov 1883. I linked Maria Hovell (1801-1883) in through this line in Betty Elworthy's book: ' James Baker Elworthy married Elizabeth Helvetia WATSON, only daughter of Maria nee HOVELL and Jonathon Miller Watson. Maria was said to be sister to William Hovell, who with his partner Hume, carried out many journeys of exploration.' |
