- Notes: Adelong Splashes The death of Mr. Martin Donnellan, a few days ago, vividly recalls memories of an unfortunate fatal ac cident in the Gibraltar Mine some years ago, in which Mr. Arthur Tillet was killed. Messrs Tillett, Martin Donnellan and Dan Wiles were mates, having a tribute in the old workings of Ratcliff's shaft, on the Gibraltar company's lease. They were running stulls and picking the loose ore out of the mullock. Mr. Tillett had just walked on top of an old stull ahead of his mates, when the timber underneath gave way, and he was immediately enveloped in the dirt. The alarm was given, and it was at once seen that the poor fellow had not the slightest pos sible chance of being alive, and thro ughout the greater part of the night men worked feverishly to get his body, which they eventually did. On the alarm being given, men came from all directions to render assis tance in recovering the body. The shock to his mates was a terrible one, and, from that day, Mr. Donnellan was never the same man. He never seemed to get over the blow and shock, and gradually failed in health ever since, till death claimed him. Everything possible was done to relieve him, but he passed quietly away, and the remains were laid to rest in the Adelong Cemetery.
