Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 24 Dec 1928
DEATH OF MRS JAMES CARR. Having only recently rallied from a bout of sickness and being about again, Mrs. Mary Ann Carr, of "Woodbine," Herbert-street, Tumut, had another bad turn on Thursday and though only 8 hours abed she expired from a sudden collapse of the heart at 5.45 on Thursday afternoon last. Deceased was the relict of the late James Carr, who predeceased her 30 years ago, and had passed her 87th year. Tumut was the place of her nativity. She was the youngest daughter of the late William Hayden, and was married in All Saints' Church in 1859, by Rev. Fox. There were 15 in the family (11 sons and four daughters), six sons predeceasing her, viz : Robert, George, James, Walter, Frank and Rowley, the latter being one of Australia's Gallipoli fallen heroes. The survivors are William (Gundagai), Charles (Tumut), Thomas (Holbrook), Fred and Eli (Tumut), Mrs. Douglas, Mrs. O'Mally (Sydney) and Misses Sarah and Emma (Tumut). The subject of this obituary resided for 42 years in the home in which she died, for 40 of which she carried on the noble profession of nurse and midwife, in the early days of Dr. H. W. Mason's honored career as a medico and surgeon in this community. Hundreds of our men and women were brought into the world by her aid, and proud are their mothers to acknowledge the wonderful knowledge and aptitude she displayed in accouchement cases, as well as the eulogy of Dr. Mason. Apart from the part she enacted in her profession, the late Mrs. Carr was a kind friend and counsellor to her sex, ever of a gentle and charitable disposition and ladylike in her bearing; a mother who performed her matronly duties with a constant thought for her offspring, their welfare and their future. The community is richer by reason of her noble deeds and considerate acts, and poorer because of her loss ; with all her weight of years she retained her faculties in a marked degree and up till almost the last her advice was sought where the other services she had rendered in the past could be no longer availed of. She was ably assisted in the conduct of her private maternity hospital by her two unmarried daughters, Misses Sarah and Emma, who looked to her every want when the hand of Father Time placed her in declining years and sickness. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, the large cortege being tacit testimony to the respect and esteem in which she was held. The remains were laid alongside those of her late husband in the Church of England portion of the Old Cemetery, Rev. F. W. Rettie officiating at the gaveside and Messrs Fuller and Burt being the undertakers. The coffinbearers were her two sons Fred and Eli, Messrs Sol Kitto, Harry Hayden, Jack McCullum and Archie McGillivray. Mr. Thos. Carr and Mrs. Douglas were unable to be present at the funeral through illness.
