Phoebe has turned out to be very tricky with conflicting information.
The obituary below says she was married to John Blundell. NSW BDM index has her married to Abraham Blundell in 1877. Canberra and Queanbeyan Biographical Register has her married to both John and Abraham (pps291 & 18) but only partially listed under John (p19). Birth records NSW BMD show Phoebe have 9 children between 1878 and 1902 4 to Abraham, 1 to John and 4 with no father listed. The obit below list 7 children alive and 2 deceased. Several of the children listed in the obituary as John’s were in fact Abraham’s.

OBITUARY MRS. PHOEBE ANNA BLUNDELL As was briefly mentioned in our last issue the death occurred in the Tumut and District Hospital on Thursday last of Mrs. Phoebe Anna Blundell, relict of the late Mr. John Blundell of 'Forest Lodge,' Tomorroma, at the great age of 86 years. In February last deceased fell off a chair whilst playing with one of her grandchildren and broke one of her legs. She entered the Tumut and District Hospital and was making good progress, but she suffered a stroke on the Friday prior to her demise and from which she did not recover consciousness. The late Mrs. Blundell was a native of Duntroon, her maiden name being Shumack. She married Mr. John Blundell at St. John's Church, Canberra, who predeceased her by 15 years. Mr. Blundell owned a property at Brindabella, which was later taken over by the Federal authorities when Canberra was made the Federal Capital. Twenty-eight years ago he purchased the 'Forest Lodge' property at Tomorroma. On her husband's death Mrs. Blundell carried on the management of the property for nine years. For the past six years she has been residing with her son-inlaw and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Don Bush, of 'Rocklow,' Tomorroma. Deceased was a very active woman for her years and always enjoyed good health. Just prior to last Christmas was the first occasion she had ever been in hospital. In her younger days she was a great church worker. A family of one son and six daughters survive, viz.: Everard (Tomorroma), Clara (Mrs. Goslett, Micalong), Stella (Mrs. Pankey, Queanbeyan), Daisy (Mrs. A. Buckley, Tumut), Pearl (Mrs. Waters, The Entrance), Sylvia (Mrs. J. Smith, Batlow) and Audrey (Mrs. D. Bush, Tomorroma). There are 56 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren. One son, Howard, and two daughters, Bernice and Dora (Mrs. Hollingsworth) predeceased her. The funeral took place on Friday last, interment taking place in the C. of E. portion of the Tumut New Cemetery. Rev. S. Broadfoot officiated at the graveside and Mr. C. W. Burt carried out the mortuary arrangement. The pall-bearers were Messrs. E. Blundell (son), A. Buckley, D. Bush (sons-in-law), W. Buckley, H. Blundell (grandsons) and E. Sheehan. |
