| Personal Notes: |
|
On Oct 1837 at the Limerick City, County Limerick, quarterly assizes, Mary nee Hennessey was convicted and sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing a quilt
She arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney on 28 Mar 1838 on the ship "Diamond". On arrival, she was sent into service with Mr. Richard Brook's family She was 18 years of age when she married John Turner on 1 Jul 1843 in Jerrabomberra. They had 9 (nine), children. She received her Certificate of Freedom on 16 April 1846. Cooma Monaro Express 1899 Mrs Turner Senior, who breathed her last at Woolway, on the 7th inst, came to Monaro in the forties, under engagement as a house keeper to the late Richard Brooks, Senior, at the original Gegedzerick Station. For forty years Mrs Turner was with the Brooks family and was known by her younger branches of the family and in fact by the residents as "Granny Turner". When the 1861 land act came into force Mrs Turner's late husband Richard launched out as a free selector and put together a very valuable property on the Gegedzerick Run, where the Old couple reared a family of two daughters and six sons, all of whom are alive and residing in the district. The daughters married respectively Messrs. Geo and William Blyton. The old lady at the time of her death was over 80 years of age, and up to a few days before her demise enjoyed excellent health. Her death is attributed to an attack of lung congestion. A remarkable coincidence in the old lady's death was the fact that she breathed her last whilst on a visit to the residence of the eldest son of the late Richard Brooks, and practically on part of the original property. Her life was one of charity, kindness, and goodness, her name being a household word in one of the district. By her departure from this life, one of the best mothers that ever baked bread is lost to her family, and one of the most sterling friends to the district has for ever left. The funeral took place on the 8th and her remains were interred to the Gegedzerick cemetery where a very large concourse of relatives and friends paid their final tribute of respect to her memory. Burial 8 Jun 1899 Gegedzerick Cemetery, Berridale |
