The Tumut and Adelong Times 19 feb 1929
MRS MARY VAUGHAN It is with sincere regret that we have to chronicle the death of one of our grand old pioneers, in the person of Mrs. Mary Vaughan, relict of the late Mr. Thomas Vaughan, who passed away peacefully at 5.30 a.m. on Tuesday last, at the advanced age of 89 years. Her demise is regretted by the whole community of Gundagai and district. The late Mrs. Vaughan was a native of County Clare, Ireland, and came to Australia in August, 1863, and a little later in the same year came to Gundagai. She married, in Ireland, the late Patrick Peuter, and in the sixties they had their home at Sharp's Creek, Adelong, where her husband was accidentally killed. Some years afterwards she married, in Tumut, the late Thomas Vaughan, and after ab out eight years' residence in the Adelong district they again returned to Gundagai in 1879. A coincidence in the death of the deceased is that she passed away on 67th anniversary of her first wedding day. Deceased was a lovable woman, and had a very dear and retentive memory of events that occurred during her lifetime. Since the death of her husband — about 18 years ago — she had lived with her daughter Susie, who tenderly cared for her till the end, her one thought being the comfort and pleasure of her loved mother. The old lady although frail in stature, was one of the very wiry kind, and despite many serious bouts of illness her strong constitution always brought her round, and even to within a week of her illness she was very cheery and loved to chat with Her old friends. She always had a kind word for everyone, and it can safely be said she never uttered an unkind word, which is the reason why she was so much loved by both old and young. She was a devoted member of the R.C. Church, and derived much consolation in carrying out its teachings, and was one of its old band of pioneer women who assisted in the big church efforts of the early days. Since his death she greatly missed her old friend and medical advisor, Dr. Gabriel, who thoroughly understood her case, and in whom deceased had the greatest confidence. She is survived by one daughter and two sons, viz, Susie, James, and Austin, besides 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Deceased's two brothers (Thomas and James Roughan) predeceased her, but her one sister (Mrs Geaghan) , who has reached her 85th year, still survives, and was a great comfort to her loving sister in her last illness. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, her remains being laid to rest alongside those of her husband and brother in the Catholic portion of the North Gundagai cemetery, Rev. Fr. Ryan performing the graveside service. Among the many mourners who travelled long journeys to pay their last respects to our old and respected resident were Mrs. B. Ford (a family friend of 44 years) of Waverley ; Mrs W. Graham (granddaughter), Urana road, Wagga ; Mr. and Mrs. F. Withers, Burrowa; Mr. and Mrs. J. Whitticker, Wagga. The pall-hearers were Messrs A. and J. Lynch, J. Geaghan, and Jas Lynch. Several beautiful wreaths covered the coffin. |
