FATAL TRAIN ACCIDENT.
An accident of a very sad and
awful nature occurred at Proserpine
early on Thursday morning, result
ing in the death of Mrs. Brookes, of
Ayr, and her granddaughter, aged
about three years. It appears that
she was proceeding from Ayr to
Proserpine by the mail train and,
on arrival at Proserpine at
about 4 a.m., thinking it was
not going to stop, jumped off
with the child in her arms and fell
under the carriage, which went over
her, cutting off one of her legs and
causing other fearful injuries the
child being killed instantly. Not
withstanding her terrible injuries,
Mrs Brookes lived until 9 a.m. The
bodies were taken by that night’s
train to Ayr for interment. Mrs.
Brookes was a native of Bowen, the
eldest daughter of the late Mr and
Mrs Donald Cameron, of Clunes,
Lower Burdekin, and a niece of Mrs
Hornung, George Street. The child
was a daughter of Mrs White, of
Proserpine; Mrs Brookes was widely
known and highly respected and
her untimely death under such
tragic circumstances; will be deeply
regretted.

Daily Mercury (Mackay) 12 April 1926
Proserpine is still in the grip of the
horror, of the railway accident which
occurred on Thursday morning last,
When Mrs. Brooks, of Ayr, and her little
granddaughter, Olive Wight, lost their
lives in such a tragic manner.
