Blue Heaven Shop Sandra - email 19 July 2015 Hi Helen ! I must admit I had forgotten I contacted you re the Birkins but it is an amazing coincidence to hear from you right now ! I have found my research/discoveries to be very interesting and it has all come about in the last few days ! I will leave you to draw your own conclusions – most of it is not really relevant to your family but makes good reading on my side !! Elizabeth Maria Gardiner : born in 1843 in Westbury near Launceston, parents were both convicts, sent to Tasmania. FIRST marriage, at age of 15 (1858) to RICHARD LOCKWOOD : first son JOHN THOMAS LOCKWOOD (1859-1915) second son HENRY BIRKIN LOCKWOOD (1862-1938). SECOND marriage 1865 to ALFRED BIRKIN. According to recently found Birkin relatives, it would seem that John Thomas Lockwood and Henry Lockwood both took the name of BIRKIN when their mother (Elizabeth) married Alfred. John married and had 11 children and is buried in an unmarked grave in Kyneton cemetery. Henry married Martha Eve Sutherland Cockburn and their son ALFRED BIRKIN was born in 1884 and married SARA JANE LATHAM IN 1921. Henry was a butcher I think and they lived in Kyneton for most of their married life. I do not know if they had any children. But the story doesn’t end their !! In 1864 Elizabeth had another son named Alfred Birkin but she was not married to Alfred at that time ! There are so many Birkins around Kyneton that I think some of the time-line may get a little entangled at times especially when they are called the same/similar names !! however I do have some of this information from a Birkin still living there. So – Elizabeth and Alfred Birkin went on to have 14 children, one of whom was my grandmother and had 2 others with Richard Lockwood. Thank you for getting back to me – it prompted me to start looking for the Birkins again, I had given up for a while and I have also contacted Sean Nugent and funnily enough, Margaret Cameron is my cousin on my fathers side, completely unknown until last year and she was looking for Birkins to help me !! I will also get in touch with the other person. I do have all this ‘stuff’ as my husband calls it, on Ancestry. |
