Note 4: James Erasmus Washington Pollard in the Australia, Death Index, 1787-1985 Name: James Erasmus Washington Pollard Death Date: 9 Nov 1937 Death Place: Queensland Registration Date: 1937 Registration Place: Australia Father: Samuel Mother: Rachel Amy Church Registration Number: 004490 Page number: 1518 The Northern Miner (Charters Towers) 10 Nov 1937 OWNER KILLED Explosion At Bonnie Doon Mine James Pollard's Tragic End Caught by the full force of a terrific explosion resulting from a firing off of seven 1/8-inch plugs of gelignite 213 feet underground in the Bonnie Doon mine on Hogsflesh Creek, several miles to the south of the city, yesterday afternoon, James Erasmus Washington Pollard, aged about 50, one of the goldfield's best known miners, was killed instantly. His injuries included a contused wound below the left clavicle, which probably punctured an artery in the neck, a compound com- minuted fracture of the left arm, two compound fractures of the left leg, and two of the right leg, bruises and abrasions to the chest, abdomen and right arm. With one of his sons, James Pollard Jnr., the deceased at 3 o'clock was working on the western side of the No. 3 level of the mine, which for the past three years he has been engaged in re-opening. Both men were in 60 feet from the shaft, working about 17 feet apart. Each had bored a hole for a firing out, putting in seven 1/8 inch plugs in either hole. Agreeing to fire together, they applied matches to their respective fuses simultaneously, but the older man's fuse apparently failed to light. The men went to the safety of the shaft, where they heard the detonation as the charge lit by Pollard Jnr. exploded, but there was no second report, and it was surmised that the other fuse had failed to light. Calling out that he would touch off the unexploded charge before the air cleared, the deceased went back along the underlie. Apparently coinciding with his arrival at the face at which he had previously been working the explosion occurred, killing him in- stantly. As soon as news of the tragedy was brought to town Ambulance Super- intendent J. A. Powell went post haste to the mine, and was first on the scene. Shortly after the police and the Inspector of Mines (Mr. E. J. Laun) arrived, and assisted in conveying the body to the surface. The late Jim Pollard was one of the best liked miners on the field. It was a queer twist of fate that he should have been killed in a mine situated not one mile from the place where he was born. In the early days of Charters Towers his family lived on the Golden Alexandra, and he learned the mining trade at the skilled hands of his father, who worked in very many of the early shows. Growing up in Chart- ers Towers, he married the daughter of one of the best known miners on the field, "Mudgee" Williams, who later founded a prosperous vineyard off Excelsior Road. When the goldfield declined about 20 years ago, the late Mr. Pollard went south, and in Brisbane established a motoring business, embracing a service station and a line of service cars run- ning to the Lamington Plateau. Hard hit by the road tax regulations of re- cent years, however, he disposed of his interests in Brisbane about three years ago, and came back to Charters Towers with the object of re-developing the Bonnie Doon, a proposition that had been in the back of his mind for many years. His development work there was not without success, and with sinking operations he had located specimen stone. Just when he could see the re- ward of his work, however, a reef which was located recently in the No. 2 level, the intervention of fate has prevented his proving its value. It was whilst working this new develop- ment at the lower level that the acci- dent that cost him his life occurred. With his wife and three sons, he has since his return to Charters Towers lived at the Bonnie Doon. To his family, other members of which reside in the south, the city extends its deepest sympathy.
