Box, which took place recently at Sydney at the age of 82 years. Mrs Box was an old Bowen identity and once kept a confectioner’s shop near Zimmerman’s Hotel.

HORNUNG. Another of the few remaining links with the early days of Bow en, in the person of Mrs Mary Hornung, widow of the late W. Hornung, her husband having pre deceased her 21 years ago, passed away on Monday last at the ripe old age of 80 years and 10 months. She was the fourth daughter of the late William Stanley and came to Australia from Tipperary, Ireland, in 1872, at the age of 24 years, and married William Hornung in 1876. They kept an hotel at Ukaluuda and afterwards at Strathbowen (Bowen River) re siding at the latter place for many years, where besides keeping the hotel they were engaged in dairying and stock raising. She resided in Bowen since the death of her husband in Dalrymple Street and the last 4 years in George Street. The, death of her husband and only son two years afterwards were sad blows which caused her great sorrow. Of a cheerful and kindly disposition she was well liked and respected. Four years ago she expressed a desire to return to her native land and spend the remainder of her days with her brother, Mr John Stanley, and his family, and with that purpose in view her nephew and niece, Mr and Miss Stanley, came out from Ire land, but she was never strong enough to make the journey. The funeral, took place on, Tuesday at 11 a.m., Rev. Rymer (Church of England) officiating at the grave side. Many nice wreaths were placed on the coffin and expressions of sympathy extended to the relatives. Mr R. Cameron and Mrs Pollard, nephew and niece, from Ayr, Low er Burdekin, were in Bowen during the last few days of her illness and paid the last respects to their aunt.
