Sunday Times (Perth) 18 March 1934 MISS EILEEN RALPH Who has been awarded, the Arnold Bax Prize for the Royal Academy of Music. For the past six years she has been studying in London, and last year won the Academy Gold Medal. On March 6 she gave a successful solo recital in the Wigmore Hall. This talented young pianist is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Ralph, of Nedlands. The Daily News (Perth) 23 June 1941 Daily News (Perth) 23 June 1941 Much Bombed WA Pianist On The Air Eileen Ralph, West Australian pianist, who has been three times bombed out of her London home, will broadcast from London tomorrow. Wife of Thomas Matthews, well known English violinist, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Ralph, of Nedlands, and has often broadcast in the Empire programmes in recent years. Last time her mother heard from her she was recuperating in Dorset after, an illness and her third bombing, in Dorset. Tomorrow's broadcast is timed for 2.45. Perth time. West Australian (Perth) 3 June 1942 WEST AUSTRALIAN PIANIST Eileen Ralph's ABC Contract Two prominent London musicians, Thomas Matthews, violinist, who was a former leader of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and his wife, Eileen Ralph, the West Australian pianist, will arrive in Australia at the end of July under an 8-week engagement to the Australian Broadcasting Commission. They will give concerto performances and solo and sonata recitals from the studios. These artists, who are now in New Zealand for the New.Zealand Broad casting Service, left England last September for Singapore, where Mr Matthews was to take up the position of musical director of the Malayan Broadcasting Corporation. They travelled via America and were in New Zealand when Singapore fell. As a soloist in England, Mr Matthews has played with every orchestra and conductor. He resigned his leadership of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1941 through pressure of work. This will be Miss Ralph's first visit to Australia for 11 years, since she went to England to the Royal Acadeiny of Music on an Associated Board scholarship. Her reputation is based on a mod ern and classical repertoire. Since leaving Australia she has toured Switzerland with English singers, during which she broadcast from Geneya, broadcast from the BBC and scored a notable success in Manchester which led to her joining Myra Hess, Louis Kentner and Clifford Curzon in the playing of the complete Beethoven sonatas in the 1940-41 season. Daily News (Perth) 1 Oct 1942 Eileen Ralph Home Again There was an excited family reunion and introduction on the Perth railway station today when the Westland arrived. Brilliant Perth pianist, Eileen Ralph, embraced her father, Mr W. H. Ralph, for the first time for more than 14 years, and her mother for the first time for five years. Then she introduced them to her husband, violinist and orchestra leader Thomas Matthews. It is 14 and a half years since tiny, titian haired Eileen won a scholarship and went to London to study. This is her first trip home since then. Her mother visited her in London five years ago, but did not meet her future son-in-law then as Eileen herself met him only two months before their wedding on Anzac Day, 1941. Thomas Matthews, former leader of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and Eileen Ralph met through Myra Hess when they joined forces to play the complete Beethoven Sonatas during the 1940-41 season. They went through the blitz of London and were twice bombed out of their home. On one of these occasions Mrs . Matthews had a narrow escape. Her husband, doing orchestral work in Scotland, wired to his wife to join him. A few hours after she left her room collapsed with the wall of a theatre. Mr and Mrs Matthews were on their way to Singapore by way of America, and had reached New Zealand when Singapore fell. Mr Matthews had been appointed Director of the Malayan Broadcasting Commission, and his wife had been appointed solo pianist. As Eileen Ralph, the young Perth pianist scored a big success abroad. She played in London concerts, toured Switzerland with a group of English singers, broadcast several times over the B.B.C. She is very thrilled to be home. |
