OBITUARY.
MRS. ELIZABETH SCHMITZER.
Another well known and highly
esteemed citizen of Wauchope, in the
person of Mrs. Elizabeth Schmitzer,
passed away at her . residence, on I
I Tuesday night of last week. The '
I funeral took place on the following
i day from the Church ' of England
; to the Wauchope cemetery, where I
Canon Gerry (Port Macquarie) offl- |
! ciated at the graveside in the pre
I sence of a large gathering of rela- ]
tives and ? sympathisers, many of
I whom journeyed from the Manning
? district where the deceased was well
I known.
The late Mrs. Schmitzer was born
77 years ago at Mitchell's Island,
Manning River,, and was brought to
young womanhood in the pioneering
atmosphere that existed Lhere in
those far-off days. In the year 1888
she was married to Mr. Edward
Schmitzer, and for many years the
couple lived at Mitchell's Island and
i raised a large family who, in their
turn, also won the esteem of a wide
i circle of acquaintances. Twenty-flve
[ years ago the couple moved to Pap
[ pinbarra where they continued farm
i ing pursuits until they retired from
active work to live in Wauchope
I where, five years ago, they celebrated
the 50tli anniversary of their mar
riage. Three years ago the subject
of this notice was obliged to under
go a serious operation in St. Luke's
Hospital, Sydney, and this, together
with severe internal injuries receiv
ed in a motor accident near Kemp
sey on November 27th of last year,
led to the decline in health which
eventually proved fatal. During the
period of her final illness she was
lovingly cared for by her daughter
(Mrs. Berrigan), and daughtersin
law (Mesdames O. and J.. Schmit
zer). grand-daughter (Daphne Berri
gan).. and also by her nephew, Mr.
R. H. Bulley, of Wauchope Tele
phone Linesmen's staif, who has been
a member of the Schmitzer house
hold for many years. The late Mrs.
Schmitzer was a sincere Christian,
and love of her Church dominated
her life and guided her in the up
bringing of a family of whom any
parent could be justly proud.
In addition to her husband, five ]
sons and one daughter survive to .
mourn their loss, viz., John Edward i
(Coff's Harbour i, Albert (Senior
Police Constable. Haberfield), Edgar
(Port Macquarie), Oswald (Wau
chope) and Walter Schmitzer (Pap
pinbarra), and Violet (Mrs. Berri
gan, Pappinbarra). ^One daughter,
Ada. passed away in infancy. There
are 22 grand-children and two great
grandchildren.
The late Mrs. Schmitzer was a
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
William Atkins, of Mitchell's Island,
the only surviving member ' of the
Atkins family now being Mrs. John
Jobson, of Taree. — 'Hastings Shire
