Case of Suicide.
The Deputy Coroner, Mr Geo. Walker, J.P.. held a magisterial Inquisition on Tuesday into the circumstances surrounding the death of James Ballantine, of Upotipotpon, on 22nd January, from gunshot wounds in the head.
The following evidence was given:
Thomas Gilbert Ballintine deposed : Deceased was my brother and resided at Upotipotpon. Last saw him alive about 11am. on the 22nd inst. He was at his residence and I was talking to him. He then appeared to be in his usual state of health and was not complaining. He made enquiries about the funeral of George O'Brien, of Goorambat. I told him and we talked about various matters. He was anxious about O'Brien, be cause he had known him for years. Left him then, and had not noticed anything unusual.
At about 1 p.m. the same day, when I was returning from the funeral at Goorambat. I saw a man lying in Mr H. Wilson's paddock, a few chains from the road. I went over to it and recognised the body to be that of my brother James. Saw a gun lying by his side with the muzzle point ing towards him. His hand was all shattered and appeared to be quite recently done and was bleed ing. Then went to a neighbour, Mr H. Wilson, and we got a buggy rug and placed over him. Went at once to Benalla and informed the police. |
