Suicide ot Mc John Cairns. On Sunday morning Cairns, was shocked to its centre with the almost incredible news that Mr John Cairns, the well-known princi- pal of John Cairns, Limited, had at 10.30 a.m. committed suicide by shooting himself with a revolver through the head. The fatal deed was effected in his office during the quiet of Sunday morning, just a few minutes prior to Mr C. Martin attending the office, where he was due at 10.30. at the request of the de ceased, who on the previous afternoon asked him to be down in the morning, sharp, at 10.30. When Mr'Martin was passing the Empire Hotel he heard a shot, but attached no importance to it until told by Antonio, the well-known Austrian fisherman, who was outside the office that "someone had fired a revolver. When Mr Martin, who was cor- respondence clerk for Mr Cairns, entered, he found his late chief lying dead on his back on his office floor with a revolver near his hand, a pool of blood pointing unmistakably to what had occurred: Mr Cairns was one of our most respected citizens, trusted by everybody and universally esteemed. He had been identified with the district for nearly twenty years and was ever to the front whenever his purse or energies were appealed to. He was a charitable kind-hearted man, an indulgent father, good husband, and is every way a worthy citizen. His health, however, has been far from right for many months, and business worries have latterly troubled him a lot. It is but fair and just to say that his mind was unbalanced when he took his life -the result of long standing nervous disorder. On all sides genuine expressions of heartfelt regret have been voiced and not an unkind or uncharitable whisper has been ven- tured. He leaves a widowand one child, and three children by his first wife. The body was removed to his home in Shield-street and the funeral took place at 5 p.m. the same day, when a large number of sincere friends paid him the last homage possible. The age of deceased has been variously stated, but we believe he was approaching the ?? |
