Aged 65 years. Funeral Notice. FUNERAL NOTICE. The friends of the late Mr George King- ston are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment, Sale General Cemetery, leaving his late residence, Gippsland Times 31 Aug 1896 SUDDEN DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT. Mr George Kingston, who has lived about Sale for the past twenty years, being at one time proprietor of the Latrobe hotel, died very suddenly on Saturday afternoon at his residence,Raymond Street north. It appears he had just finished dinner, and was lighting his pipe in the pasage, previous to going out, when he fell to the floor unconscious, and died within a minute or two. Deceased was a man of exceptionally robust constitu tion, and only a couple of days before had remarked that he was feeling very well. Some years ago he had his leg torn in the drum of a threshing machine, which was working about two miles out of the town, and it had to be amputated close up to the hip. He was taken in a vehicle to the Gippsland Hospital immediately after the accident, and at the time the doctors re marked that it was only his immense muscu lar strength that enabled him to survive the injuries. His recovery was rapid, and his general health has always been good, so it came as a surprise to his family to learn that the cause of his death was heart disease. Mr Kingston was a younger son of a well known shipowner, and was born at Lesslee, County Cork, in 1831. One of his brothers for many years commanded a ship belonging to the Kingston firm, trading to American ports. The family was very well connected, one of George Kingston's uncles being an admiral in the Royal Navy, and his mother was one of the Hays. George came to Victoria in 1864, and for some time he was gold mining at Daylesford. Then he took up land in Gippsland and farmed it himself, before trying the hotel business. He married in Victoria and leaves a widow and three sons. The funeral will take place at the Sale cemetery this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Kingston renewed his licence for the Latrobe Hotel Gippsland Times 26 May 1882 A boy, the son of Mr Kingston, of the Latrobe Hotel, had a very narrow escape of having his leg broken in Raymond street yesterday afternoon. He and other lads were hanging on to Dan Fogarty's bullock dray, when his foot by some means got between the spokes of the wheel, and was jammed against the floor of the dray. Fortunately, a sudden jerk of the dray threw the boy's foot from its dangerous position, and he escaped with a sprain and a bruising. Gippsland Times 24 Dec 1884 Application by G. Kingston for a renewal of the license. Mr Beneraft supported the application, which was opposed by the a police, represented by Senior-Sergeant Irwin, on the grounds that the house was badly conducted, and frequented by persons of improper character. Mr Patten watched the case on behalf of the owner of the pro- perty. Gippsland Times 16 Sept 1885 Bridget Jamieson proceeded against George King- ston to obtain possession of the Latrobe hotel under the Landlord and Tenants' Statute. Mr Patten appeared for complainant ; the defendant was not present. Evidence was given that the necessary notice to quit had been served, and the owner of the property, Mrs Jamieson, had sought to obtain posses- sion. Mr Howitt ordered that a warrant be issued to compel defendant to give possession to complainant within seven days. Gippsland Times 21 Jan 1889 An elderly married woman, named Kings ton, had a narrow escape from injury in Raymond-street on Saturday night. It ap pears that she was crossing from one side of the street to the other, when a shaft of a grocer's cart, which was being driven along the road, struck her and threw her down. Fortunately no serious injury was sustained by Mrs Kingston, who was taken to the hospital, where a couple of contused wounds, one on the face and one on the hand, and several bruises, were attended to, and she was enabled to leave the institution yester day morning. We understand the driver of the cart tried hard to avoid the collision, and Mrs Kingston did not observe the danger she was in until too late. HIS LAST LETTER. The following extracts from the last letter received from Private Kingston by his mother and brothers are of special interest just now in view of the uncertainty of his fate : Kroonstadt, May 17. I am in good health, and have been doing a good hit of fighting lately. . . I have seen all the Sale fellows of the Second Con tingent. We have driven the Boers miles and miles in a day. One of the Boer prisoners said they did not like fighting the Australians because they would never retreat but would come on in spite of the pom-pom. The General gives us great praise for the way we have been fighting. Have no time to write much. .We have no tents now, and (sleep out every night. It is very cold although we have plenty of blankets. The sooner the war is over the better. Even the English soldiers are full up of it. . I hope we go to England after the war is over.
