From Find A Grave
George Hugh Kidd (1824–95) was a surgeon born on June 12, 1824, in Armagh. He was the son of Hugh Kidd and Eliza Kidd (née M'Kinstry). His education took place at schools in Monaghan and Newry, followed by medical training at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). He became a licentiate of the RCSI in 1842 and earned an MD from Edinburgh University in 1845, where he was awarded a gold medal for his thesis on vaccination and the importance of revaccination.
Kidd's early career included serving as a medical officer at the Derrylin dispensary district in Co. Fermanagh until 1844. He then became a demonstrator of anatomy at the Park St. (Lincoln Place) School of Medicine in Dublin (1845–49) and later lectured in anatomy and physiology at the Dublin School of Medicine, Peter St. (1849–c.1860).
He worked for many years at the Coombe Lying-in Hospital in Dublin, where he was eventually appointed obstetric surgeon in 1868 and assistant master in 1875. During his tenure as master (1876–83), the hospital underwent significant changes, including the introduction of puerperal antisepsis. Kidd was instrumental in implementing aseptic and antiseptic practices and organized the appointment of a pathologist to reduce infection risks. His efforts led to remarkable outcomes, with only one death recorded among 500 deliveries during 1879–80.
Kidd was known for his skill in treating vesico-vaginal fistula and was a pioneer in several medical techniques in Ireland. He also developed a successful private practice and served as a consulting surgeon to the Richmond and Mercer's hospitals. He was particularly sensitive to the needs of children with intellectual disabilities, advocating for and co-founding the Stewart Institution for Idiots, Ireland's first institution dedicated to their education, which opened in 1869.
In addition to his clinical work, Kidd was editor of the Dublin Quarterly Journal of Medical Science (1863–68) and contributed to numerous medical journals. He held various prestigious positions, including president of the RCSI (1876), president of the Irish Medical Association (1879), and was the first representative of the Irish medical profession on the General Medical Council in 1886. He received several honors, including an honorary MAO from TCD in 1883 and honorary fellowships from various obstetrical societies.
Kidd was a proud Ulsterman and Presbyterian, and he actively supported home rule. He passed away on December 26, 1895, at his home in Dublin and was buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery. He was married to Frances Emily Rigby, who predeceased him in 1884, leaving behind a widow and a young family.
