Personal Notes: |
From County Cork to Quambatook by Louisa Gibson
JOHN GOOD was a man of many fine qualities, not the least being of a kind and gental nature, which endeared him to all who were fortunate enough to make his acquaintance. John had travelled from his birth place County Cork, in 1852 and had taken up farming in Spring Creek, near Warrnambool. It was here that 30 year old John meet 25 year old Ellen Gregory also from County Cork, Ireland and married her on 3.11.1859 at the Roman Catholic School House, Dean Thomas Slattery officiated. The witmesses at the marriage were Mary Faye and Edward Good. The question: Was Edward Good a brother of John? For the next few years John and Ellen occupied themselves farming at Spring Creek and Killarney. John the conscientious, hard-working father who never embraced the Catholic faith of his wife, gave her every support in raising the family in the religious beliefs of her Irish family. After spending several years at Spring Creek and Killarney, John was one of the many whose attention was drawn to the north-west of Victoria. Between 1874 and 1878 John and Ellen left their all to small Killarney property and settled at Sheep Hills, near Warracknabeal. Once more John and Ellen decided that a move was necessary to accommodate the needs of their growing family, They chose to select land at Towaninnie, a few miles from Quambatook. Under the 1869 Lands Act, properties were secured by Ellen, Henry John Jnr and Thomas. Ellen and Robert were each granted land under the 1884 Act. No property was owned by John Snr. One presumes that he was still holding the Sheep Hills land and regulations may have prevented him from selecting. Thomas, Robert and John also obtained leases on Lalbert Creek, an area some 30 miles north-west of Quambatook. John and Ellen settled at Quambatook, firts in a simple make-shift home which was later replaced by a substantial mud brick building with spacious verandahs built by Robert. Adjacent to the house was a large dairy. A room again of mud brick, white-washed walls both exterior and interior, was used to store the farm produce. It was in the quiet dairy that Ellen was known to smoke her clay pipe. No one knows if this was a habit she acquired later in her life or if she brought the idea with her from Ireland. The 1890s was not a comfortable area for the Australian people, with the country in the grip of a serious depression. Work was scarce and farming unpredictable, but despite this, the family of Ellen and John Good were beginning to move out and each form their own family units. |
