PERSONAL
At one time a master tailor in Charters Towers. Mr. John Byers died at a private hospital in Ayr on June 1. Born at Canonbie, Dumfrieshire, Scotland, on the 23rd October, 1859, the late Mr. Byers came to Australia by the sailing ship 'Stirlingshire,' arriving
at Townsville on the 2nd November, 1882. Before landing he had his first great adventure in Australian waters, an experience which he remembered to the end. The ship in which he made, what was in those days a great and hazardous voyage, ran on to a reef at Picnic Bay and he with others, swam ashore to Magnetic Island. They returned to the ship, which was safely refloated and landed its passengers at the Port. Townsville, in those days, was a little bush town and here the deceased settled down to quiet Industry which characterised his life throughout. It was at Townsville that he met and married Jessie MacLean and commenced a happy partnership which lasted for 54 years, during which they were seldom parted. The 54th anniversary of the wedding took place on the 7th June, 1939. Leaving Townsville, the deceased came to Charters Towers in 1891 and worked at his profession for some years, eventually opening a business here which he carried on until May, 1910, when he went to Brandon to open a similar business. In 1913 he turned his attention to Ayr and established a business there which he conducted to within a few weeks of his death. In his early days the late Mr. Byers was an athlete of some note and was an accomplished footrunner and cricketer. The late Mr. Byers Is survived by his widow, two sons, Tom (Proserpine), Robert (Ayr), six daughters, Mrs. G.L. Rennie (Ayr). Mrs. W. Patterson (Julia Creek), Mrs. B. Romer (Charters Towers), the Misses Kate, Nellie and Jessie Byers, and twenty six grandchildren. One son, Alec., was killed during the Great War, and a younger son, Kenneth, died last year.
