The Prahan Telegraph 24 Aug 1889
DEATH OF MR ROBERT BARRY
Another of Prahan’s oldest identities has gone over to the great majority, in the person of Mr. Robert Barry, the well known speculative builder, who died in his residence at Hastings, on Tuesday last. The deceased resided in Prahan since 1842, and for some years carried on business as produce dealer. He visited Europe in March last, and while there married. He was very wealthy, having a considerable amount of property in Chappel street and elsewhere. The funeral took place yesterday at the St Kilda cemetery, and was largely attended.

Most of your readers will by this
time have heard of the marriage of
our respected fellow townsman, Cr
Peddle, to Mrs. Barry of Elmbank.
(Lucky man!) on Friday evening
last after drill; nearly the whole of
Hastings Battery, together with a
number of the residents in all about
50 men good and true: decided on
serenading the happy pair. On
arrival, the band played "Home
Sweet Home": after which several
songs were sung. On Mr. Peddle
making his appearance, a call was
made for three cheers, which was
heartily responded to. Refreshments
ad lib were served out to the visitors,
on Mrs. Peddle returning her thanks
for the compliment, she remarked
it would be repaid ere long, an
announcement that was received by
renewed cheering. A start was then
made homeward, all being gratified at
the hospitality and courtesy shown
them by the host and hostess. The
whole affair was ,carried out in a quiet
And orderly manner.
