MR. JOHN CHRISTIE. The death on Thursday of Mr. John Christie, at the age of 80 years, re moved an esteemed citizen. The late Mr. Christie arrived in Mackay 54 years ago from Scotland in the sailing ship Hannah Landells. He was connected With the commercial life of the city for many years, as manager of Sharp, Seller and Co., becoming a director when this concern was made into a limited company. Afterwards he was connected with the firm of Phillips and 'Christie Ltd. He took an active in terest in St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, being a member of the oholr, ' Committee of Management, Session i Clerk, for many years and Sunday i school superintendent. He was a mem ber of the School of Arts committee, and Chamber of Commerce, and al- - iways took an Interest in anything for 'the welfare of Mackay. He was a life member of the Manchester Unity I.O. - Oddfellows. Two years ago, Mr. and ,Mrs. Christie celebrated their golden .wedding, when a happy gathering of :Jthe family and friends took place at J their home "Retannoch," In Brisbane- street. Last year he celebrated his 1 80th birthday. This was also an occa- slon of rejoicing. During the last few years Mr. Christie had led a quiet and ( happy life at home. He Is survived I'and three daughters— Messrs. Jack and :fTom (Mackay), Harry (Rockhampton), . and William (Cunnamulla), Mrs. A. 'Grant (Mackay), Mrs. W. G. Price IXMareeba) and Miss Jessie Christie (Mackay). Of a genial and kindly .nature, the late gentleman was esteemed by a large number of friends /and his passing will leave a gap. The funeral took place yesterday after noon and was attended by a represen tative gathering of friends and busi ness men, the service of the Presby terian Church being conducted by Rev ®"dn' B-A- and that of the" M.U.I.O.O-F. was read by Brother H Draman.
