A CHILD'S DEATH.
REFUSED ADMISSION TO A HOSPITAL.
The death of a child named Michael Luke Murphy, aged 7 years, formed the subject of an inquiry on Monday evening at Auburn, the [Acting District Coroner, Mr. E. L. Maitland S.M., presiding. From the evidence adduced It appears that on Monday night at a late hour the child had a bad attack of croup, and at midnight the parents started off with him from Bankstown, with a view to having the child treated at St. Joseph's Hospital, Auburn. On arrival there at 2 o'clock on Monday morning the night nurse declined to admit the child, and advised the mother to take It to Dr. Furnival. The mother, however, went to a local chemist instead, and procured some ipecacuanha wine, which she administered to the child, and then returned home. On arrival home the child died in its mother's arms.
Julia Isabella Murphy, mother of the deceased, stated that the child had been subject to croup. The child became so bad on Monday night that she took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, and told the night nurse that he had croup. The nurse said that she would see the sister, and when she come back she told her that the sister had said they could not take in such cases, and that she had better go and see Dr. Furnival.
Dr. E. C. Hall, stated that in his opinion the cause of death was asphyxia, brought on by laryngal croup. If the child had been admitted into the hospital and operated on, there might have been a chance of saving its life; or had the parents followed the advice of the sister and taken it to a medical man an operation might have saved its life. Most hospital management provided that a patient was only admitted upon the recommendation of a medical man. He thought that in this case, as it was 2 a.m., the nurse ought to have rung up a medical man, and ascertained what ought to be done. Dr. F. H. Furnival, one of the medical officers of the institution, stated that in cases of accident or emergency the nurse or sister, would generally consult a member of the medical staff before admitting such patient. There was but little accommodation in the hospital for cases such as croup or diphtheria. Such cases were generally sent on the Parramatta District Hospital if the patients could safely travel. The mistake made in this instance was that he had not been rung up but from what he had seen and heard he thought the child was past help when it came to the hospital. An operation might have given the child a chance. Nurse Walker, in his opinion, was a shrewd and capable woman, and her action in consulting a higher, authority had absolved her from any blame.
The Coroner recorded a finding that the child died from natural causes -to wit, croup. |
