- Notes: The following was written by the late Patricia O'LEARY in 1995 for "Gateway to the Past" which was published by the late Chris RYAN of Dublin in 1995:
"With their infant son Thomas Joseph Patrick Powell O'CALLAGHAN (who was later to become my father) they left London aboard "MV Doric" on 25 July 1893, arriving in Wellington, New Zealand 106 days later. From the "Doric" of 3071 tons they transferred to "MV Kennedy" and sailed via Nelson to Hokitika on the West Coast of the South Island. The West Coast was described "as one long solitude, with a forbidding sky, frequent tempests and inpenetratable forests." (R McNab, "Murihuku", 1909). Hokitika was a river port, plagued with migrating channels and a bar of variable depth. Vessels over 250 tons seldom risked entry into the port where dozens of ships were wrecked. Twenty miles south of Hokitika, Paddy had a job on one of the large gold claims. Gold was reclaimed by sluicing, whereby a good stream of water was directed against the terrace by a high pressure nozzle. This brought down the cliff face. Water and loosened material then flowed down a head race (channel) below, into a sunken sluice box and out down a tail race leaving the gold behind the riffles [grooves for trapping particles of gold] in the box. It was cold, wet and dangerous work. Big boulders had to be cleared from the claim and large stones had to be constantly forked out of the sluice box and cleared away from the tail. |
