Many of your readers will be very sorry to hear of the death of Mrs J. H. Irving, which occurred at 7 a.m. on the 14 of July. Mrs Irving had been ailing for some time before her death, and has suffered considerably, though her last moments were peaceful. On Thursday, July 14th, her body was taken to Kawakawa and interred in the cemetery there. Mrs Irving was born in Sydney, and came to New Zealand in 1839, in a vessel called the Currency Lass. She stayed with her uncle and aunt in the Russell district until the Maori War in 1846, when she returned to Sydney. In 1848 Mrs Irving again sailed for Russell in the vessel called Deborah, and then lived in the Bay of Islands until 1852, when she was married to Mr J. H. Irving by the Rev. Gould. After having lived for two years in Auckland and 2 years in Mangonui, Mr and Mrs Irving settled down in the Russell district, and remained there until 1877. Subsequently, they came to Ruapekapeka where they have remained ever since. Mrs Irving leaves her husband, a family of 9 boys and 4 girls, and a very large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her loss.
