One of the pioneer farmers of the Sebastian district passed away on Tuesday night, in the person of Mr. Samuel Macaulay. As stated in Saturday's "Advertiser." Mr. Macauley was some time ago stricken with paralysis, and during the past fortnight death was expected at anytime. The end came at 11 o'clock on Tuesday night. He was a colonist of 45 years standing, and when the Sebastian district was thrown open for selection, 40 years ago, he secured an allotment, and resided there ever since. He was 63 years of age, and a native of the North of Ireland. A widow and grown-up family of two sons and three daughters are left to mourn their loss. One of the sons is Mr. John Macaulay, the well-known poultry expert, and the eldest daughter is Mrs. John Tinkler, also of Sebastian. The funeral took place yesterday to the Eaglehawk Cemetery, and was the largest seen in the Sebastian district for some time. As showing the wide esteem in which the deceased gentleman was held, when the cortege arrived at Eaglehawk a great many more vehicles joined. As Mr. Macauley and his family had for many years past taken great interest in the Sebastian Methodist Church, the revs. John Willians, W. Moore, and Thos. Alday officiated at the grave. The Rev. Mr. Williams read the burial service, and the Rev. W. Moore delivered a touching address, in which he paid a high tribute to the deceased's sterling Christian character. The Rev. Mr. Alday offered up prayer. The Rev. Mr. Williams also conducted a service at the house before the departure of the cortege. The coffin was borne to the grave by Messrs. Wm. Gordon, J. Daly, H. Gaskell, and T. Brown. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. H. Joy, of Eaglehawk. |
