Sydney Morning Herald 10 March 1909
DEATHS.
BARRETT.-March 10, at Nyngan, Claude Thomas, dearly loved son of T. and A. Barrett.

Cobar Herald 16 March 1909
Nyngan Bathing Fatality.
DIVED IN SHALLOW WATER.
The death occurred on Wednesday morning, of Claude Barrett, a well-known local resident. The circumstances surrounding the death are very sad. On Sunday afternoon last a number of people were bathing in the swimming hole in the Bogan, when deceased came down and dived into the water where it was only about three feet deep. He did not rise immediately, but others in the water did not suspect that there was anything wrong until he had been in the water some minutes. Fearing he had met with an accident, a couple of young men went to his assistance, when they found that he was unconscious. The unfortunate young man was carried out to the bank, where first aid was rendered, and after some time animation was restored, but he was unable to move a limb. Dr. Day was quickly on the scene, and ordered the patient's removal to his home. An examination revealed that deceased was paralysed. There is little doubt that in diving his head struck the bottom, presumably with some force, straining the muscles of the neck and causing irreparable injury to the spinal cord, producing paralysis. Not the slightest hope was held out for his recovery, and he passed away peacefully on Wednesday. The accident was terribly sudden, and was a great shock to the young man's friends. He was only 28 years of age. Universal sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Barrett and family in their sad bereavement. — Nyngan 'Observer.'

Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate 23 Oct 1914
PIONEER NYNGANITE DEAD.
Mr. Thomas Barrett, aged 75 years,
and for 33 years a resident of Nyngan,
died last week. There was no town
where the capital of the Bogan now
stands when Mr. Barrett and his young
wife pioneered there. Soon they were
established in the best hotel in the far
west, and square dealings and good
business tactics, together with an ever-
increasing popularity, set the tide of
prosperity flowing steadily in on them.
In a few years they were possessed of
a big share of worldly wealth—quite
enough to retire with plenty, but the
town had been good to them, and they
decided to play their innings out there.
And Mr. Barrett was really kind to
Nyngan. He was the first man to set
the pace at building on substantial
lines, and with the utmost regard to
architectural beauty. Now a pile of
buildings stands as a memorial to his
loyalty to Nyngan and his pride in the
old town. Peace to his ashes—he was
a good man—and sympathy with Mrs.
Barrett and the four sons—Bert., Har-
ley, Clive and Roy—and Mrs. P. S. An-
till, daughter.

OLD NYNGAN
Nyngan was a publicans paradise in the eighties. There were more hote;s to the population that in any part of the west, more even than there were on a population basis in Bourke, where fortunes were spent in drink. At this time men vied with one another in spending in hotels, and there was a lot of what came to be called "bush flashness'.
Mr Thomas Barrett kept the hotel which bore his name. It was not his first venture in Nyngan, but that will be explained. Mr Barrett was born in Sydney in the year 1838, and early in his life became a carrier between Sydney and Bathurst. The roads were rough and ill formed in those days, and the journey often took three weeks to accomplish. The freights were necessarily high sometimes being 1 pound per cwt. being charged. Mr Barrett had a couple of teams on the road, and he was one of the most trusted men in the trade, and also one of the best known. Retiring from the business he was in comfortable circumstances, and opened an hotel at Guyong near Orange. It was on the main western road, and there he also did well. In fact Thomas Barrett always did well. Next he appeared as the host of the Green Gate Hotel at Orange, a house that has just been sentenced to death by the Licencing Board. He remained the licencee of the Green Gate for over three years, and then started the same business in Sydney, keeping in succession the Governor Bourke Hotel in Market street, and the Morning Star in George street. Then he came west again and lived privately in Dubbo for some months while he was finding out the lay of the wind, so to speak. Next he went to Nyngan, and sat at the receipt of custom in the Old Carrier's Arms for two years. He sold out to Andy Lawson, and built Barrett's Hotel, one of the finest buildings in the town, and it was conducted as the best hotel in the far west. There fortune flowed in on him and his wife, who was a Miss Kidd, daughter of a well known Richmond artisan of those days. Mrs. Barrett was an excellent business woman, and even more than her husband was responsible for the high standard which was maintained in the conduct of this business. The hotel was afterwards converted into a two story building, and Mr Barrett died a wealthy man. I wonder what became of Claude, the son and heir.
