Dubbo Dispatch and Wellington Independent 11 Nov 1921 OLD NYNGAN Nyngan was a publicans paradise in the eighties. There were more hote;s to the population that in any part of the west, more even than there were on a population basis in Bourke, where fortunes were spent in drink. At this time men vied with one another in spending in hotels, and there was a lot of what came to be called "bush flashness'. Mr Thomas Barrett kept the hotel which bore his name. It was not his first venture in Nyngan, but that will be explained. Mr Barrett was born in Sydney in the year 1838, and early in his life became a carrier between Sydney and Bathurst. The roads were rough and ill formed in those days, and the journey often took three weeks to accomplish. The freights were necessarily high sometimes being 1 pound per cwt. being charged. Mr Barrett had a couple of teams on the road, and he was one of the most trusted men in the trade, and also one of the best known. Retiring from the business he was in comfortable circumstances, and opened an hotel at Guyong near Orange. It was on the main western road, and there he also did well. In fact Thomas Barrett always did well. Next he appeared as the host of the Green Gate Hotel at Orange, a house that has just been sentenced to death by the Licencing Board. He remained the licencee of the Green Gate for over three years, and then started the same business in Sydney, keeping in succession the Governor Bourke Hotel in Market street, and the Morning Star in George street. Then he came west again and lived privately in Dubbo for some months while he was finding out the lay of the wind, so to speak. Next he went to Nyngan, and sat at the receipt of custom in the Old Carrier's Arms for two years. He sold out to Andy Lawson, and built Barrett's Hotel, one of the finest buildings in the town, and it was conducted as the best hotel in the far west. There fortune flowed in on him and his wife, who was a Miss Kidd, daughter of a well known Richmond artisan of those days. Mrs. Barrett was an excellent business woman, and even more than her husband was responsible for the high standard which was maintained in the conduct of this business. The hotel was afterwards converted into a two story building, and Mr Barrett died a wealthy man. I wonder what became of Claude, the son and heir. |
